BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 18, 2017) - The LIU Post softball team dropped a pair of games Tuesday to East Coast Conference rival New York Institute of Technology at the LIU Post Softball Complex in Brookville.

The Pioneers (21-17, 7-7 ECC) were edged by the Bears (17-13, 9-7 ECC) in both contests, losing by 3-0 and 3-2 counts.

Game #1: LIU Post 0, NYIT 3
In the opener, senior pitcher Laura McLaughlin (Gilbert, Ariz.) stymied the Pioneers' bats, limiting the green and gold to just three hits.

Though McLaughlin retired 13 consecutive batters at one point, LIU Post brought the potential tying run to the plate in the bottom of the sixth.

With two outs, sophomore designated player Ashley Melendez (Levittown, N.Y.) struck out swinging to halt the Pioneers' lone threat of the game.

Sophomore pitcher Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) took the loss in the decision, allowing two earned runs and two walks and fanning four in a complete-game effort.

Game #2: LIU Post 2, NYIT 3
In the nightcap, the Pioneers fell behind 1-0 early, until a solo homer by freshman outfielder Abbey Fortin (Langley, British Columbia, Canada) in the fourth leveled the score.

However, the Bears got a two-run homer from Kaitlyn Lanksbury (Huntington Beach, Calif.) in the top of the sixth to re-claim the lead.

Despite trailing 3-1, the hosts had an opportunity to win the game in the seventh, after loading the bases with none out.

Seader hit a one-out sacrifice fly to pull the Pioneers within a run atr 3-2, but Fortin grounded into a fielder's choice that retired Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.) at second base to end the game.

Freshman pitcher Katie Humhej (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) threw seven innings of five-hit, three-run, one-walk, four-strikeout ball in the defeat.

Head Coach Jamie Apicella and his LIU Post squad are back in action Thursday (Apr. 20), when they travel to Sparkill to for a doubleheader at ECC nemesis St. Thomas Aquinas College at 3 p.m.
