OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Apr. 5, 2017) - Sophomore catcher
Julia Seader (Piscataway, N.J.) and freshman outfielder
Abbey Fortin (Langley, British Columbia, Canada) each homered on Wednesday, as the LIU Post softball team earned a split with East Coast Conference rival New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury.
The Pioneers (12-10, 3-3 ECC) took the opener by a 5-2 score, but fell to the Bears (8-10, 2-4 ECC) in the nightcap, 5-1.
Game #1: LIU Post 5, NYIT 2
In the opener, the Pioneers jumped out to a 4-0 lead through three innings and never looked back.
Seader, who singled in the first to account for the team's first hit of the game, eventually scored on an error by the Bears' infield to put the visitors on the board.
Later in the frame, junior first baseman
Gianna Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y.) doubled the green and gold's lead with an RBI single to right, making it a 2-0 game.
Then, in the third, Seader led things off with another single, before Fortin launched a two-run homer to left-center to widen the gap to 4-0.
Sophomore pitcher
Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) was dominant in the circle for LIU Post, tossing seven innings of six-hit, two-run, one-walk, two-strikeout ball in the victory.
Game #2: LIU Post 1, NYIT 5
In the nightcap, Seader stayed hot, drilling a one-out solo homer down the left-field line to stake the Pioneers to a quick 1-0 advantage.
However, the Bears responded with five unanswered runs to take their first lead of the day and secure a split of the doubleheader.
Freshman first baseman Brooke Scherer (Westbury, N.Y.) had a game-tying RBI single in the first, and put NYIT in front for good in the third with an RBI double to right.
Freshman pitcher
Katie Humhej (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) was tagged with the loss for the Pioneers. She allowed eight hits, five runs (four earned) and three walks and struck out seven in six innings of work.
Head Coach
Jamie Apicella and his LIU Post squad return to action Friday (Apr. 7), when they travel to Easton, Mass. to face Stonehill College in a non-conference doubleheader at 2 p.m.
