UNIONDALE, N.Y. (May 4, 2017) - The LIU Post baseball team put up a three-run ninth Thursday to come away with a hard-fought 5-3 win against Molloy College in an East Coast Conference showdown at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex in Uniondale.
Sophomore third baseman
Jimmy Mendyk (Massapequa, N.Y.) got the ninth started with a single and subsequently advanced to third on a throwing error by Molloy (18-25, 10-12 ECC) senior pitcher Dominic Danetti (Wantagh, N.Y.).
Two batters later, senior outfielder
Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) laid down a perfectly-placed safety squeeze bunt to score Mendyk for the go-ahead run.
Junior outfielder
Rob Andreoli (North Wantagh, N.Y.) then followed with a two-RBI single to center to increase the Pioneers' (25-17, 15-7 ECC) lead to 5-2.
Earlier in the contest, LIU Post rallied from a 2-1 deficit to even the score in the seventh. After back-to-back singles to open the frame, sophomore designated hitter
Anthony Vaglica (Franklin Square, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to plate sophomore second baseman
Sal Geraci (Bayport, N.Y.) for the game-tying run.
Senior pitcher
Jake DeCarli (Higganum, Conn.) earned his third-straight win, en route to improving to 7-1. He pitched eight innings of nine-hit, two-run, two-walk, one-strikeout ball.
Meanwhile, senior pitcher
Brian Tinney (Farmingdale, N.Y.) locked down the save, striking out a pair in an inning of work.
Head Coach
Mike Gaffney and the Pioneers return to action Saturday (May 6), when they host Molloy in an ECC doubleheader at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville. First pitch is set for noon.
