DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 7, 2017) - On Sunday, the fourth-seeded LIU Post softball team squared off against top-seeded Mercy College in the finals of the East Coast Conference Championship at Smith Field in Dobbs Ferry.

The Pioneers (27-26) forced a decisive game with a 7-2 victory, but lost a 7-0 decision in the winner-take-all contest.

Game #1: LIU Post 7, Mercy 2
Trailing 1-0 through two innings, the Pioneers came back to take the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third.

Sophomore catcher Julia Seader (Piscataway, N.J.) hit a game-tying two-out RBI double to left-center, while freshman outfielder Abbey Fortin (Langley, British Columbia, Canada) reached on a fielding error to score senior infielder Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.) for the go-ahead run.

The green and gold eventually led 3-1 after four innings, but LIU Post tacked on a four-spot in the fifth to pull away for the victory.

Freshman third baseman Megan Sneeden (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) delivered a three-RBI bases-clearing double into the left-center field gap in the frame.

Freshman pitcher Katie Humhej (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) earned the win in the decision, tossing four innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts.

Game #2: LIU Post 0, Mercy 7
In the decisive contest, the Mavericks (32-14) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, on an RBI double by junior outfielder Morgan Lloyd (East Lyme, Conn.).

The Pioneers nearly rallied in the sixth, as McCoy and Seader opened the inning with back-to-back hits to put runners on the corners.

However, Mercy sophomore pitcher McKaily Cusumano (Monroe, Mich.) retired the next three batters in order to keep LIU Post off the scoreboard.

The hosts then shut the door on the contest with a six-run sixth, led by a grand slam from sophomore pinch-hitter Kaylee Stevens (Simi Valley, Calif.).

Sophomore pitcher Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) was tagged with the loss. She threw 4.0 innings of three-hit, one-run, one-walk, two-strikeout ball.
