BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - Junior forward
Andrea Huntzinger tallied a goal and an assist to lead the way for the No. 10 LIU Post women's soccer team on Tuesday afternoon, as the Pioneers downed Pace, 3-0, at Pioneer Soccer Park.
With the win, LIU Post moved to 7-1 on the year while the Setters fell to 4-5.
In addition to Huntzinger's three-point effort,
Julia Duffy and
Gabrielle Clark also added goals, while
Erin O'Connor chipped in an assist for the Pioneers.
Hillevi Eklow registered her fourth shutout in seven wins this season, making three saves on the afternoon.
The two sides went back and forth over the opening few minutes of play, as neither team registered a shot until the 15th minute of action when a Huntizger try was blocked.
After Eklow made her first save of the game in the 20th minute on a header in front of the cage, the Pioneers turned on the pressure. LIU Post fired off the game's next four shots, the last of which found the back of the net and put the Pioneers up 1-0 in the 26th. After corralling a long pass from Huntzinger, Duffy beat a pair of defenders and sent a try on target. Goalkeeper Hayler Pascoal got a hand on it for Pace, but the ball trickled over the line and gave the Pioneers the early advantage.
LIU Post continued to control momentum over the remainder of the period, taking a 1-0 lead into the intermission with a 7-2 edge in shots.
Less than two minutes in the second half, the Pioneers struck again, as Clark stole a ball from a Pace defender in front of her own net before finishing to the keeper's right side and putting LIU Post ahead by a pair.
The Pioneers extended their lead to three less than six minutes later, as O'Connor played a ball from the right side of the box to the top of the 18 for Huntinzger, who unleashed a powerful right foot over the keeper's head and into the back of the net.
LIU Post will return to action on Saturday at noon, hosting Roberts Wesleyan College at Pioneer Soccer Park.
