OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - The LIU Post volleyball team battled back to a five-set (25-16, 17-25, 21-25, 25-19, 16-14) win over neighboring NYIT on Wednesday night in Recreation Hall.
Despite falling behind two sets to one, the Pioneers (12-3, 2-1 ECC) fought back to win the final two sets, including winning the final set 16-14 after being behind 12-14.
In the deciding set, the green and gold held a 12-7 advantage before the Bears (11-3, 1-2 ECC) strung together seven straight to take the lead at 14-12, therefore being one point from claiming the match.
This did not sway the Pioneers' heart and fight as they were able to secure the final four points. The run started with a kill by junior
Giulia Genna (Rome, Italy) off a feed by sophomore
Kassie Akouri-Tejedor (North Miami Beach, Fla.). That was followed by a pair of kills by junior outside hitter
Rachel Londot (Utica, Ohio) to give the visitors a one point advantage (15-14).
The contest was sealed with a perfectly placed service ace by sophomore defensive specialist
Abby Eckhardt (Westminster, Colo.).
A pair of Pioneers finished with a double-double as Londot notched a game-high 18 kills and added 15 digs, while Akouri-Tejedor registered 18 assists and digs. Senior libero
Indira Rojas (Coamo, Puerto Rico) scooped up a season-high 32 digs, while sophomore
Lea Brady (Woodbridge, Va.) was a force at the net with a career-high nine blocks.
LIU Post returns to action on Saturday (Sept. 30) for the Saint Anselm Tri-Match. The green and gold will face American Int'l and Saint Anselm at 1 and 3 p.m.
