MANCHESTER, N.H. - The LIU Post volleyball team picked up a pair of non-conference victories on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Saint Anselm, sweeping American Int'l before battling back to a 3-1 win over the host Hawks.
LIU Post 3, American Int'l 0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-21)
The Pioneers trailed 20-22 late in the first set before scoring six of the final eight points thanks to kills by four different attackers -
Lauren Kloos (Kings Park, N.Y.),
Elise Strange (Chesapeake, Va.),
Giulia Genna (Rome, Italy), and
Kassie Akouri-Tejedor (North Miami Beach, Fla.).
The second set had a similar ending as the scoreboard reflected a tie at 19-all until the green and gold rattled off five-straight (six of seven) with the final two LIU Post scores coming via
Lea Brady (Woodbridge, Va.) kills.
In the final set, the Pioneers jumped out to an 8-0 advantage. Although the Yellowjackets fought back, they never got close enough to tie or take the lead as LIU Post closed out the match thanks to back-to-back AIC errors.
Senior outside hitter
Danielle Valenza (Hauppauge, N.Y.) was the lone Pioneer with double-digit kills (10), while junior outside hitter
Rachel Londot (Utica, Ohio) added eight kills and scooped up a game-high 12 digs.
LIU Post 3, Saint Anselm 1 (19-25, 25-16, 26-24, 26-24)
After dropping the first set, the visitors had their best set win of the afternoon holding the hosts to just 16 points in the second set. Leading 24-16, Kloos put down the final kill off a feed from Genna.
Trailing for the first time in the third set at 18-19, the Pioneers four of the next five points to retake the lead. The Hawks were able to knot the score at 24-24, but a Valenza kill and an attack error by Jordan Schamp secured the set victory for LIU Post.
The final set had an identical ending as the score was tied at 24-24 before Valenza knocked down a kill followed by yet another Schamp attack error. Only this time the attack error was as a result of a block by Genna and Brady.
Valenza and Londot each registered 16 kills over the four sets, while Londot also scooped up 14 digs for the double-double. Genna and Akouri-Tejedor matched assist marks with 25 each. Brady had another stellar outing at the net, recording seven blocks.
The Pioneers return to action on Tuesday (Oct. 3) for a 7 p.m. non-conference tilt versus Adelphi at the Pratt Recreation Center.
