Eklow, O'Connor Garner ECC Women's Soccer Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week Accolades
CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. – After opening up the season 2-0, the LIU Post women's soccer team captured the East Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week thanks to outstanding performances by junior keeper
Hillevi Eklow (Varobacka, Sweden) and freshman forward
Erin O'Connor (Setauket, N.Y.), as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon.
The 18th-ranked Pioneers kicked off the 2017 campaign with a 5-0 rout of Southern Connecticut State (Spet. 1) and a 2-1 defeat of Southern New Hampshire (Sept. 3). Eklow was solid in net as she registered a .933 save percentage over the two contests by allowing just one goal while turning aside 14 shots. Ten of those saves came in the one-score victory over SNHU.
On the offensive side, O'Connor was spectacular in her green and gold debut week. The Rookie of the Week led the Pioneers with six points and two assists, while tying for the team lead with two goals. O'Connor registered a four-point (1g,2a) showing against the Owls, and then added a goal and an assist in a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Penmen.
Up next for LIU Post is its home opener as it hosts Nyack on Thursday, Sept. 7 at 4 p.m. at Pioneer Soccer Park.
