ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - The LIU Post women's basketball team secured a big conference victory on the road Wednesday night, downing the 2017 ECC Champion Molloy Lions, 72-52. With the win, the Pioneers improve to 9-5 overall and 4-0 in league play, while the Lions dip to 6-8 on the year and 1-3 in conference action.
LIU Post got out to a hot start, taking an 18-10 advantage after the first quarter thanks to back-to-back layups by Sasha Patterson and
Shannon Doyle in a nine second span during the final 23 seconds of action. The only lead the home squad would see for the entirety of the game was early on at 4-3.
After a nearly even second quarter (LIU Post 16, Molloy 17), the Green and Gold held a 34-27 lead at the end of the first half as both Doyle and
Kylie Garrett notched eight points, while Doyle also pulled down a half-high seven boards.
The second half was more of the same as the visitors won both the third and fourth quarters (21-12 and 17-13) to secure the 20-point victory. It was a complete team effort as 10 different Pioneers scored, with Garrett leading the way with 19 points in 20 minutes of action including going 5-of-8 from three. Doyle chipped in with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Patterson tallied the lone double-double of the contest with 11 points and 13 boards.
The Pioneers held the lead for 37:52 minutes of action, with the largest lead at 21 points (71-50). They also held the advantage in nearly every statistical category - field goal percentage (45.0-32.1%), three-point field goal percentage (37.5-25.0%), assists (14-7), steals (15-9), blocks (4-1), and rebounds (45-30).
LIU Post returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 6 as it hosts ECC-foe Queens College for a 1:30 p.m. match-up in the Pratt Recreation Center.
