BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – A hat trick by senior Emily Miller saw her tie the program record in goals scored and lead the No. 10 LIU Post field hockey team to a 6-0 shut out over the University of New Haven Wednesday.
"Today was a very good team win," said head coach Raenee Savin. "Very happy with the result and the way we bounced back. I'm extremely happy for Miller – tying a school record! Hoping she'll keep it going and raise the bar even higher."
Miller's hat trick bought her tally to 16 on the season and 82 in her career, tying Carlee Dragon for the LIU Post record.
The victory improved LIU Post's all-time record against the Chargers to 2-0.
The Pioneers out-shot the Chargers 23-3 and 21 shots on goal to two. Along with Miller's hat trick goal scorers included sophomore Sammy Bell with two and freshman Helen Flores with one. Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Vellis added three saves.
LIU Post got on the scoreboard early thanks to Miller as she tapped the ball in from the left side of the net after receiving a pass from Bell at 3:07. The roles were then reversed at 4:23 as Miller found Bell on the right side of the at 4:23 to give LIU Post a 2-0 lead.
At 53:06 Miller scored the opening goal of the second half after shooting from the right side of the net and hitting the top left corner. Bell scored her sixth goal of the season at 67:04 after she tapped the ball in after it ricocheted off the goalkeeper's leg to give the Pioneers a 4-0 lead.
Flores scored her first goal of the season at 68:40 after receiving an assist from freshman Maddie Leitner and Miller completed her hat trick at 69:32 after taking the ball down the right side of the field and send the ball soaring past the goalkeeper.
