BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Graduate student
Sasha Patterson posted 17 points with 18 rebounds and the LIU Post women's basketball team outscored Bloomfield College, 44-23 during the second half to run away with a 72-48 victory inside the Pratt Recreation Center on Wednesday, Nov. 28.
Patterson finished 5-of-7 from the floor and 7-of-11 from the free-throw line. The graduate student was also a force on the offensive glass, collecting 10 of her 18 rebounds on the offensive end. Senior
Shannon Doyle added 13 points, while junior
Asia Turner tallied five steals on the defensive end.
A cold start from the field (2-of-10) allowed Bloomfield to jump out to a 15-4 during the first eight minutes of the contest. The Green and Gold battled back quickly, however, holding the Bears scoreless during the next six minutes of action. LIU Post took its first lead when Turner knocked down a three-point field goal to give the Pioneers a 17-15 advantage. The run eventually stretched to 15 unanswered before the Bears finally found the bottom of the basket on a jumper by Sydnei Alleyne at the 7:29 mark of the second stanza. The Pioneer defense continued to make life difficult for the Bears during the second period, as Bloomfield made just one of its first 11 field goal attempts. The two sides eventually made their way to the locker room after shooting a combined 29.2-percent (19-of-65) from the field, with the Pioneers holding a narrow 28-25 advantage.
The Green and Gold came out of the locker room with much better offensive efficiency, starting the period 5-of-10 from the field to take a commanding 35-27 lead less than three minutes into the half. The lead ballooned to as many as 16 points during the final minute as sophomore
Natalie Hickman drilled a three-pointer for three of her five points during another major run. Bloomfield righted the ship during the final 30 seconds of the period when Caitlin Townes drilled two triples and opened the fourth up with another three-point bucket to make it 47-40.
LIU Post dominated during the final frame, outscoring Bloomfield 25-11, led by 10 points by Patterson and six points by redshirt-junior
Taylah Hudson to cruise to the 24-point victory.
The Pioneers will look to keep rolling on Saturday, Dec. 1 when they host Holy Family University in a non-conference matchup at 1:30 p.m.
