RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Redshirt-junior guard
Taylah Hudson set a new career-high in scoring for the second consecutive game and the LIU Post women's basketball team closed out 2018 with a 73-58 victory at Felician University on Saturday, Dec. 29.
LIU Post improves to 3-0 all-time against Felician University in the first matchup between the two schools since the 2012-13 season. The Pioneers move to 11-1 on the season, riding a seven-game win streak to close out the 2018 calendar year.
The Pioneers fell behind after an early three-point field goal by the Golden Falcons (3-2), but quickly erased the deficit with a 13-2 run to take a 16-5 advantage with 3:20 remaining in the quarter. Hudson opened the game 3-for-3 from the field for six points during the stanza, helping the Pioneers to a 14-point lead (21-7) after 10 minutes of play.
LIU Post continued to dominate during quarter number two, as graduate student
Sasha Patterson scored six of the Pioneers' first eight points to continue to hold the double-digit advantage. A 7-0 run midway through the period gave the Pioneers their largest lead of the half (37-18). A 33-16 advantage on the glass helped the Green and Gold continue to hold the 19-point edge at the end of the first half (39-20).
Hudson dropped in eight points during the third quarter to help the Pioneers withstand a 1-for-8 effort to start to the half. Overall, LIU Post shot just 5-of-21 (.238) from the field during the stanza, but the defense stepped up to hold Felician to just 20-percent (3-15) shooting during the same stretch to lead 51-35 at the end of the period. Hudson continued to have the hot hand during the fourth quarter, scoring eight consecutive points for the Pioneers over a two-minute span midway through the period. The advantage proved to be enough for LIU Post who coasted the rest of the way for the 15-point victory, its ninth double-figure margin of victory this season.
Hudson led all scorers with 22 points on the day, besting her previous career-high mark of 16 set against Roberts Wesleyan in the final game prior to the holiday break earlier this month. Patterson contributed 13 points and eight rebounds, while freshman
Ja'Lyn Armstrong netted 10 points. Sophomore
Natalie Hickman hauled in a team-best and career-high nine rebounds on the day to help the Green and Gold to a +20 (58-38) advantage in rebounding.
The road trip continues for the Pioneers when the calendar turns to 2019 as the Green and Gold travel north to Albany to take on the College of Saint Rose on Wednesday, Jan. 2 at 5:30 p.m.
