WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senior
Sasha Patterson recorded her 11th double-double of the season and the LIU Post women's basketball team extended its win streak to five games with an 85-74 victory at the University of the District of Columbia Feb. 14.
The Pioneers remain a half-game back of St. Thomas Aquinas College for the number one seed in the East Coast Conference (ECC) Tournament. LIU Post improves to 14-1 in ECC play while UDC drops to 2-14 against conference opponents.
The game featured five ties and two lead changes, but a layup by sophomore
Mikaiya Moore at the 2:51 mark of the first quarter gave the Pioneers the lead for good, as the Green and Gold pulled away by as many as 13 points midway through the third period. The Firebirds chipped away and made it a five-point game (60-55) at the end of the stanza, but the Pioneers held them at bay during the fourth quarter thanks to nine points by senior Kyle Garrett who was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field during the stretch.
Patterson led the Pioneers with 19 points and 13 rebounds, recording her fifth double-double in her last six contests. Moore added 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field, while junior
Shannon Doyle chipped in 12 points on a 5-of-10 shooting performance. Garrett's nine points in the fourth quarter contributed to a 12-point output, rounding out four double-digit scorers for the Pioneers.
Daeja Quick scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Firebirds.
As a team, LIU Post shot 53.4 percent from the field (31-58), while holding UDC to a 43.3 percent clip (26-60). The Pioneers dominated in the paint, scoring 50 points in the key and holding a 39-36 advantage on the glass, while also holding a 28-12 edge in points off the bench.
The Pioneers return to the Pratt Recreation Center for a huge battle with St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday, Feb. 17 in what could prove to be a matchup to determine the number one seed in the ECC Tournament. The Pioneers and Spartans will tip-off at 1:30 p.m. Fans that cannot make it to Brookville can catch the action on LIUPostPioneers.com with live video available on the ECC Network and audio available on WCWP/88.1 FM Radio.
