BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU Post women's basketball team secured the number one overall seed in next week's East Coast Conference (ECC) Tournament as it took down Daemen College, 74-61 inside the Pratt Recreation Center Feb. 23.
With the victory, the Pioneers secured the top overall seed for the conference championship and earned at least a share of the regular season championship with one game remaining.
Senior
Sasha Patterson recorded her 13th double-double of the season, netting 16 points while pulling down 11 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass. Sophomore
Mikaiya Moore added 12 points, while senior
Kylie Garrett finished with12 points off the bench behind a perfect 7-for-7 night from the free throw line. As a team, the Pioneers held a significant 43-29 advantage on the boards, while also outscoring Daemen on the bench 33-6.
After the Wildcats jumped ahead 2-0 with the game's first bucket, the Pioneers responded with 13 of the next 15 points to take the lead for good. LIU Post led by as many as 14 points (22-8) in the opening stanza, when sophomore
Asia Turner knocked down a three-pointer with less than a minute remaining. The Green and Gold took its largest lead of the contest midway through the second quarter, as Moore put home a bucket in the low post to put LIU Post ahead 34-17.
Leading by nine at the half (36-27), the Pioneers held steady in the second half, as they shot 46 percent from the field to keep Daemen at arm's reach. Garrett scored nine of her 12 points during the final stanza to finish in double figures for the 13th time this season, helping the Pioneers hold on for the 13-point victory.
The Pioneers close out the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 25 when they host Roberts Wesleyan inside the Pratt Recreation Center at 1:30 p.m.
