CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Senior
Joe Calderone earned the second All-American honor of his career with a fifth-place finish at 141 and sophomore
Anthony Sparacio earned one win at 133 at this weekend's NCAA Division II Championships.
Calderone suffered a narrow 9-7 decision setback to McKendree's
Darren Wynn in the opening round but responded with a 12-2 major decision victory on the left side of the bracket against
Dylan Udero of Adams State. The senior closed out the first day with a 9-8 victory against
Andrew Schulte from California Baptist to remain in the hunt for a third-place finish.
To open the final day of the championship, Calderone took down University of Indianapolis'
Nick Crume in a 3-2 defensive battle but came up short in a 13-11 match against
Drew Walker of Notre Dame to move him to a battle for fifth-place against King's
Bryce Killian. Calderone earned a 5-0 shutout decision victory to capture fifth-place and earn his second career All-American accolade.
Sparacio opened his championship run against Wisconsin-Parkside's
Airk Furseth but came up just short in a low-scoring bout 3-2. The sophomore kept his championship alive with a bounce-back 10-2 major decision win against
Adam Hedin of St. Cloud State. With the win, Sparacio advanced to face
Kelan McKenna from Notre Dame and again came up just short in a defensive battle 2-1.
