CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Senior
Joe Calderone and sophomore
Anthony Sparacio look to make a run at the NCAA Division II National Championships this weekend after qualifying with fourth-place finishes at the Super Region I Championships in February.
Calderone has compiled a 28-7 record including nine wins by fall this season. The senior has also added eight wins by major decision or technical fall and notched a 19-2 technical fall victory against regionally ranked
Kevin Kinyua of Mercyhurst at the regional championship. The Huntington Station native will face
Darren Wynn of McKendree University in round one at the national championship Friday.
Sparacio enters the national championship with an outstanding record at 133 this season, going a perfect 9-0 entering the regional championship before finishing the weekend 4-2. The sophomore earned one win by fall, while recording five wins by major decision and technical fall. During the regional championship, Sparacio earned two victories against regionally ranked opponents, including a 13-4 major decision against Kutztown's
Chris Crane to qualify for the national championship. The North Babylon native is slated to take on
Airk Furseth (28-5) of Wisconsin-Parkside in the opening round.
