BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The No. 7 LIU Post women's lacrosse team fell victim to a late rally by the No. 1/2 Lindenwood University Lions in a 14-10 setback in non-conference action April 25 at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
The Pioneers were held scoreless for the final 19:20 of the contest as the Lions scored the final six goals to come from behind to extend their regular season winning-streak to 39 games.
Wednesday's matchup proved to be a thrilling contest that included seven ties and eight lead changes throughout. Sophomore
Sara Stephens gave the Pioneers a lead just 76 seconds in and classmate
Brianna Feldman doubled the lead at the 23:16 mark of the first half to put LIU Post ahead 2-0.
Lindenwood responded with four of the next five tallies to take its first lead of the afternoon before LIU Post matched its biggest lead of the contest with three unanswered just past the midway point of the half to go ahead 6-4. Despite the Lions leveling the scoring late in the half, sophomore
Paige Sherlock found the back of the net with 17 seconds remaining to give the Green and Gold a 7-6 advantage at the break.
Two consecutive goals to begin the second half gave Lindenwood the lead once again at 8-7 as the back and forth action continued. The Pioneers put momentum back in their favor with three goals in a span of 3:26 to take a 10-8 advantage, but the Lions took over from there. The top-ranked Lion defense allowed just eight LIU Post shots in the second half, including just two shots in the final 18 minutes. With the Lions leading 11-10, Lindenwood goalkeeper
Rachel Ortell made a huge save on a point-blank range shot by Sherlock and the Lions scored on the following possession for a big swing in momentum. Still without striking range, the Pioneers were called for their fourth yellow card of the contest and the Lions took full advantage of the two-minute non-releasable penalty with a goal and held possession the rest of the way to hold off the Pioneers.
Feldman led the Pioneers with four goals on the day, while Stephens added a career-high three goals. Sophomore
Angela Deren chipped in three assists and senior
Olivia Kirk made nine saves between the pipes.
LIU Post returns to action on Saturday, April 28 when it hosts No. 11/18 East Stroudsburg University on Senior Day at 11:00 a.m.
