THE FIRST LOOK

The LIU Post softball team secured the No. 1 overall seed and home field advantage for the 2018 East Coast Conference Championship after finishing the regular season with a 19-5 overall mark in league play. The Pioneers will host all three days of the championship, including the opening round on Wednesday, May 2, the elimination round on Friday, May 4, and Championship Saturday May 5.

Rounding out the tournament is No. 2 seed Mercy College, No. 3 seed Molloy College, and No. 4 seed University of Bridgeport.

RIDING THE WAVE

The Green and Gold enter the postseason on a seven-game winning streak and winners of eight of its last 10 matchups. The Pioneers will host No. 4 seed Bridgeport on Wednesday in a 3:00 p.m. contest at the LIU Post Softball complex. Despite dropping two of four games to the Purple Knights in the regular season, the Pioneers will look to ride the momentum from the end of the regular season to carry them into the winner's bracket for Friday's contests.

One, Two Punch in the Circle

LIU Post sports the top two pitchers in the conference, with junior Hannah Olshevski and sophomore Katie Humhej leading the conference in earned run average, while ranking tied for first and second, respectively, in total wins. Humhej also ranks just five strikeouts behind Bridgeport's Amanda Staheli for first place in the conference in strikeouts.

The duo has combined to allow just 41 earned runs in 144.1 innings of work in conference play, combining for an ERA under 2.00. Olshevski and Humhej have also combined for an even 100 strikeouts against ECC opponents.

OFF AND RUNNING EARLY

The LIU Post lineup features arguably the most dangerous top-four hitters in the conference, with junior Julia Seader, freshman Patricia Dun, sophomore Abbey Fortin, and freshman Breanna Klaiber all hitting above .329 this season. The top of the lineup has contributed 248 hits, 84 extra-base hits, and 140 runs batted in. Fortin has led the way with a .408 average, including hitting .438 against ECC opponents. Fortin also leads the conference with 12 home runs and 52 RBIs, sitting just .006 points out of first in batting average for the triple crown.

The Pioneers will look for this offensive spark early, as the team has scored 27 runs in the opening frame this season.
