GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The storied rivalry between the LIU Post women's lacrosse team and Adelphi University more than lived up to expectation Saturday afternoon as the Pioneers handed the second-ranked Panthers their first loss of the season after senior Trish Brisotti fired a shot into the bottom right corner of the net in overtime to give LIU Post a 10-9 victory at Motamed Field.

In 25 meetings since the first contest between the Pioneers and Panthers in 2001, today's game was only the second overtime meeting in series history. The overall score between LIU Post and Adelphi is knotted at 259-all.

Junior Alyssa Mallery continued her outstanding season for the Pioneers, leading the way with a game-high five goals along with four draw controls and three ground balls. Junior Brianna Feldman added two goals while Brisotti, junior Paige Sherlock and sophomore Sara Stephens scored one goal each. Junior Angela Deren had a game-high three assists while freshman goalkeeper Hailey Duchnowski tallied 14 saves. As a team, LIU Post had a 12-10 advantage in draw controls.

While Adelphi scored the opening goal of the contest, the Pioneers took a 3-1 lead thanks to goals by Feldman (27:16), Sherlock (17:43) and Mallery (15:06). The Panthers added another goal prior to halftime but LIU Post took a 4-2 lead into the break after Feldman assisted on a man-up goal by Stephens.

Mallery scored back-to-back goals to open the second half as the Pioneers held a 6-2 lead with 26:50 to play. Adelphi fought back and made it a 6-5 game with 22:13 remaining but goals from Mallery and Feldman pushed the Pioneers ahead 8-5 with 17:28 on the clock. LIU Post and Adelphi then traded goals but three Panther goals inside the final 10 tied the score 9-9, forcing overtime.

With 18 seconds on the clock in overtime, Deren found Brisotti cutting and she fired a shot into the bottom right corner of the cage to give LIU Post a 10-9 victory.
