Women’s Equestrian Has Successful Outing at Regional Show

YAPHANK, N.Y. - The LIU Post women's equestrian team had had a successful day at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Regional Show at Good Shepherd Farm as ten riders individually qualified for the Zone Championships next weekend with an additional eight riders that will be competing at the show as part of the team.
 
In the year end results, three Pioneers were named the top three riders in the region. Senior Mallory Slack lead was named overall Cacchione Cup Rider, while senior Jessica Sulkers was second and sophomore Nicole Palmer third.
 
To start off the day, freshman Miko McGovern and Palmer qualified for open flat after placing top two in the class with Slack in third. In open over fences, Sulkers dominated with  Slack in second and junior Sam Ayala in third. In intermediate over fences, sophomore Mackenzie Ashe bested the competition with her beautiful round and junior Alex Daskam was close behind in third. On the flat, after a very competitive three heats, Ayala and junior Cara Sappelsa ended up in the top-two. Novice over fences was topped by sophomore Hedda Walltott, who also topped her novice flat class after three competitive heats with junior Kassidy Scheuring in second and freshman Grace Titus in third. Finally, in walk trot,  sophomore Sarah Wung finished second. Freshmen Kara Bromschwig and Katherine Garcia will also compete at Zones as part of the team.
 
Up Next
Next weekend qualifying riders will travel to Rochester, New York, to compete at the Zone Championships hosted by Cornell University in hopes of moving on to IHSA Nationals.
