BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The No. 8/12 LIU Post women's lacrosse team ended its regular season on a high note, taking down Roberts Wesleyan College 16-6 on senior day Saturday at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
LIU Post's Class of 2019, which included
Trish Brisotti,
Carly Spano and
Abbey Sollecito, were honored in a senior day ceremony prior to the opening draw control.
Junior
Alyssa Mallery had a game-high five goals along with five draw controls and one ground balls while junior
Brianna Feldman also made a significant impact as she added four goals, two assists and two ground balls. Brisotti and sophomore
Jamie Alvino both scored two goals while juniors Sarah Stephens and
Jenna Doherty along with freshman
Madeline Schaefer each scored once.
Defensively, juniors
Kendall Purdy and
Paige Sherlock both caused two turnovers. Freshman goalkeeper
Hailey Duchnowski finished with 11 saves.
Feldman, last week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coach's Association (IWLCA) National Offensive Player of the Week, got the Pioneers off on the right foot as she scored the game's opening goal with 28:41 on the clock. Alvino followed with her first goal of the contest with 26:06 remaining to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.
The Redhawks followed with two goals of their then Brisotti found the back of the cage at 14:31 to give the Pioneers a 3-2 lead.
A 6-0 LIU Post run followed that featured goals from Doherty, Stephens, Mallery, Feldman and Alvino along with a pair of assists from junior
Jill LoManto that gave LIU Post a 9-3 advantage with 2:40 remaining.
Roberts Wesleyan briefly halted the Pioneers' run but Mallery's goal with 1:06 on the clock gave LIU Post a 10-4 advantage heading into halftime.
The second half began similarly to the first as Feldman scored the opening goal of the game 29:14 remaining after receiving an assist from junior
Angela Deren. The Redhawks responded with a goal that made it 11-5 with 25:16 on the clock.
Brisotti's goal with 22:07 left to play led off a 4-0 Pioneer run that also featured goals from Mallery, Schaefer and Feldman; it gave LIU Post a 15-5 lead with 11:00 remaining.
Both teams would score once more with Mallery's goal with 4:08 on the clock making it a 16-6 game, which the Pioneers held onto for the remainder of the contest.

The ECC Tournament commences on Tuesday, April 30. The Pioneers will host the University of Bridgeport at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium in a quarterfinal at a time to be announced.
