Chenicek's Clutch Hit Pushes Baseball Past Dowling, 4-3
Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 13, 2012) – Junior third baseman
Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the C.W. Post baseball team over Dowling earlier today, 4-3.
C.W. Post goes to 17-14 on the year while Dowling falls 19-13 and no conferences records were affected with the game being scheduled as non-conference.
Dowling scored runs in the second and the third to take a 2-0 lead against starting pitcher
Rafael Martinez (Bronx, N.Y.). The Pioneers struggled early against Dowling's Tyler Hardison, as they did not manage a hit until freshman
Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) roped a single in the fifth.
The bats finally came alive as C.W. Post took the lead with three runs in the sixth, as sophomore right fielder
Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single to right field. Junior second baseman
Angel Pimentel (New York, N.Y.) followed with a bunt single to second baseman, and sophomore centerfielder
Rich Maccarone (Glen Cove, N.Y.) walked to load the bases. Chenicek singled to center to drive in the first run. Junior catcher
Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Pimentel, and Brunetti followed with a line drive to right field that drove in the third run.
Dowling tied it in the seventh as the Golden Lions loaded the bases against sophomore
Brandon Kruel (Sag Harbor, N.Y.), but the visitors managed only one run as Kruel got a groundout, a strikeout, and a pop up to end the inning without further damage.
The Golden Lions put runners on first and third with only one out in the top of the ninth, but sophomore
Connor McCarthy (Westbury, N.Y.) got a double play to end the inning with the game still tied.
In the top of the ninth, Iacono doubled to right center with one out and was followed by an intentional walk to Pimentel. With one out, Chenicek then stepped up to the plate later and shot a single to right field off the first baseman's glove that allowed Iacono to score the fourth and winning run.
Martinez went six innings and scattered nine hits, allowing two runs, while Chenicek went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Brunetti finished strong at the plate as well as he finished 2-for-2 with an RBI. McCarthy was the winning pitcher, improving to 1-1 on the season.
C.W. Post travels to Bridgeport for a doubleheader tomorrow against the Purple Knights starting at 12 p.m.
