#6 Field Hockey Drops Competitive Game to #5 Kutztown, 4-2
Box Score
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 2, 2010) – Sophomore Emily Labowitz (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) put in the game winning goal at the 69th minute into the bottom left of the net for the Golden Bears of Kutztown. Labowitz was fed by Senior Abbey Sheeler (Fleetwood, Pa.) two yards in front of the goal to help set up the decisive goal in the match.
The Pioneers led 2-1 at the half after two unanswered goals, one by senior Vicky DeRosa (Wading River, N.Y.) in the 17th minute and the other by fellow senior Amy Lillis (Hamburg, N.J.) four minutes later. DeRosa put in an unassisted goal 6 yards away from the goal after a C.W. Post penalty corner. Lillis' goal came off a pass from freshman Carlee Dragon (Bridgewater, N.J.). Dragon set up a wide open goal for Lillis on the right side of the net as the two executed a 2-on-1 break exceptionally.
Less than ten minutes into the second half, Kutztown's junior midfielder Kim Angstadt (Oley, Pa.) put in a goal from ten yards out as she controlled a pass from her right by a teammate, freshman Erin Reynolds (Manchester Township, Pa.).
Both teams would go back and forth throughout the game, attempting 40 shots between the two teams with Kutztown being the leader in that category with 23. Kutztown also led the penalty corner attempts by both teams, with a margin of 18-7.
With 4:12 left in the second half, the game looked to be in the hands of Kutztown, as junior Katie Brautigan (Bernville, Pa.) set up for a penalty shot that could give the Golden Bears a one goal lead with little time remaining. However, junior goalkeeper Devon Trenkle (New City, N.Y.) would make a remarkable save that would help preserve the tie and look to swing momentum in the favor of the Pioneers. Trenkle would make a total of eight saves on the day.
Kutztown would come back down the field though in the final minute, and Labowitz would put in the goal that would end up being the game winner. The play was originally set up by sophomore Imani Ferguson (Mt. Laurel, N.J.). Ferguson drove down the field with great stick skill, and would be the one who sent the ball into the zone to Sheeler who would then help set up Labowitz for the goal.
Ferguson would also add another goal for the Golden Bears in the 69th minute, making the score 4-2.
Kutztown junior goalie Emily Falko (Catasauqua, Pa.) would make all of her nine saves in the second half, not allowing a goal in the final half.
The Pioneers drop to 5-3 on the year, including 0-2 in conference play. The Golden Bears will improve to 5-2 on the year with a 2-1 PSAC East record. C.W. Post will be home again this Tuesday Oct. 5, as they host Adelphi at 4 p.m. Kutztown will be in action as well on Tuesday, as they will welcome Bloomsburg University.
