No. 7 Field Hockey falls to No. 5 Kutztown in 4-3 Shootout

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (Oct. 30, 2010)
– The No. 7 C.W. Post Pioneers field hockey team fell in a shootout to No. 5 Kutztown on Saturday afternoon 4-3 in a shootout. 
The loss drops C.W. Post to 8-8 on the season and 1-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division, while the win improves the Golden Bears to 9-6 on the season and 4-3 in conference play.
Kutztown jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by sophomore Jenna Gregory (Phillipsburg, N.J.) at the 6:11 mark in the first period. The Pioneers answered back just over two minutes later on a goal by freshman Carlee Dragon (St. James) on a pass from sophomore #Mia Paltrineri# (Middletown, Del.).
After taking a 2-1 lead on the Pioneers into the half, the Golden Bears increased their lead to 3-1 at the 43:13 mark of the second half on a goal by freshman Jamie Koenig (Springtown, Pa.). C.W. Post senior Amanda Nann (Hamburg, N.J.) would take control of the remainder of regulation scoring a pair of goals to tie the score at 3, sending the contest to overtime periods.
After two scoreless overtime periods, the two teams would engage in a stroke off. Kutztown jumped to a 1-0 lead but senior #Vicky DeRosa# (Wading River) was able to answer for the Pioneers to tie the shootout at one apiece. The second shooter for Kutztown would miss her chance as did her counterpart in the second round, junior #Brie-Claire Drost# (Wading River). The Golden Bears would re-take the lead 2-1 but offensive leader Nann scored on the third opportunity for the Pioneers, again tying the stroke-off. Kutztown scored again, followed by a Paltrineri miss, allowing Kutztown to win the game on their final stroke of the contest.
In goal for the Pioneers, senior goalkeeper #Cortney Colern# (Barker) would allow three goals in over 100:00 minutes of play while making 26 saves for the game, including eight in the second overtime period. Kutztown finished the contest with 42 shots in comparison to the Pioneers who had 14 for the day. The Golden Bears also ended up leading in penalty corners by a 23-4 margin.
The Pioneers will be back in action this upcoming Tuesday, November 2 when they travel to Pennsylvania to take on Millersville in yet another crucial PSAC East division matchup. The game is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
