Nann Nets Two In Field Hockey's Season Opening Win At Merrimack, 5-3

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (Sept. 5, 2010) – Senior forward Amanda Nann (Hamburg, N.J.) netted two goals to lead C.W. Post past Merrimack College, 5-3, in non-conference field hockey action Sunday afternoon at Warrior Field.
It was the season opener for the Pioneers as they begin the year at 1-0. Merrimack falls to 0-2.
The Pioneer offense was busy on Merrimack's defensive end in the first half, outshooting the Warriors by a 19-7 margin. The first goal was scored 32 seconds into the game when junior midfielder Amanda Miller (Newton, N.J.) fired a shot into the back of the cage for her first goal of the season.
C.W. Post went ahead 2-0 when sophomore forward Mia Paltrineri (Middletown, Del.) scored on feed from senior midfielder Sydney Hagen (Exeter, N.H.) in the 29th minute.
Merrimack cut the lead in half late in the first half when freshman forward Jessica Otis (Pittsford, N.Y.) scored on an assist from sophomore forward April Daugherty (Lincoln, R.I.) at 29:03.
The Warriors evened the score at 2-all in the 43rd minute courtesy of a goal from Daugherty.
Nann scored her first goal of the game at 49:15 that put the Pioneers back on top before Daugherty put her second goal in at 57:59.
The score did not stay tied long before freshman forward Carlee Dragon (Bridgewater, N.J.) scored her first collegiate goal in the 60th minute on a pass from junior defender Helene Bruckner (Port Jefferson, N.Y.). The Pioneers added an insurance goal from Nann, also from Bruckner, at 66:32.
C.W. Post finished the game outshooting Merrimack, 25-18, and held a 9-7 advantage in penalty corners.
Senior goalkeeper Cortney Colern (Barker, N.Y.) made nine saves for her first win of the season. Her counterpart, sophomore Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, Mass.) made 16 stops in goal.
C.W. Post returns to action next Sunday, Sept. 12 when it plays at host Franklin Pierce University at 12 p.m.
