BETHPAGE, N.Y. (Oct. 1, 2014) - On Wednesday, the voting period officially opened for the 2015 "Best of Long Island" contest, presented by Bethpage Federal Credit Union, and LIU Post earned six nominations.
Two of those categories are for Best College Sports Team and Best College Sports Coach (
John Jez). The Pioneers' 2013-14 season was highlighted by a Top-10 ranking in the NACDA Division II Learfield Cup Standings, as well as a second-consecutive East Coast Conference Commissioner's Cup.
The green and gold had 10 programs vie for an NCAA Division II National Championship, seven teams win their respective conference titles, and two squads capture NCAA Division II East Region crowns. Additionally, the field hockey and men's lacrosse programs made it to the national championship game, while swimmer
Joyce Kwok (Middle Village, N.Y.) claimed the NCAA's highest billing in the 200-yard butterfly for the second-straight year.
Honors were aplenty for LIU Post in 2013-14. The Pioneers, who compiled an overall mark of 232-89-2 (.721 winning percentage), boasted 80 All-Conference selections, 22 All-Americans, 11 Players of the Year, six Coaches of the Year, two Rookies of the Year and two Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
Behind the men's lacrosse team's run to the national title game, Head Coach
John Jez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) led the green and gold to an 11-6 record a campaign ago, including a 6-2 ledger in East Coast Conference play.
LIU Post finished the regular season at 7-5, but went on to defeat Dowling, 10-9, for the ECC Championship. From there, Jez's squad earned the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and took to the road.
The Pioneers made quick work of No. 3 Le Moyne (9-3) and top-ranked Adelphi (12-9) on back-to-back weekends, but lost to Limestone in the Division II National Championship, 12-6, at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md.
At the conclusion of LIU Post's run, Jez, who mentored 10 All-East Coast Conference honorees and four USILA All-Americans, was named the Lacrosse Magazine and CaptainU Division II Coach of the Year.
