Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 5, 2014) - The LIU Post women's soccer team lost a hard-fought 2-1 decision in overtime to Southern Connecticut State in the squad's 2014 season opener Friday at the new Pioneer Soccer Park in Brookville, N.Y.
In the second game of the 2014 LIU Post Women's Soccer Classic, the host Pioneers (0-1) fell victim to an own goal just under 13 minutes into the contest. The Owls sent a corner into the box and the ball caromed off an LIU Post defender into the net, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
LIU Post was held scoreless in the first half, as it was only able to get one shot on goal against Southern Connecticut's Erica Ridella. The Owls sent four shots toward Pioneers' sophomore goalkeeper
Hreffie Agnarsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland), who made three saves in the first 45 minutes.
The green and gold finally broke through late in the second half, as senior back
Lauren Bellone (West Islip, N.Y.) was able to get behind the Owl defense, make a move around Ridella and notch her first tally of the season, tying the game at 1-apiece.
In the overtime session, the Owls sent one into the box and after a scramble, Victoria Conde found Betti Worth for the game-winner.
Between the pipes, Agnarsdottir made two saves, while Ridella made one.
Head Coach
Mark Dawson and the Pioneers return to action on Sunday (Sept. 7), when they face No. 4 American International on Day Two of the 2014 LIU Post Women's Soccer Classic. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
