(May 6, 2015) - In the midst of one of the best single-season pitching performances in LIU Post baseball history, sophomore Jake DeCarli (Higganum, Conn.) has been named the East Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year, it was announced Wednesday.DeCarli was also named to the All-ECC First Team, along with junior first baseman David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.), while graduate outfielder Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) earned Second Team honors.DeCarli has been dominant on the hill for the green and gold this season. In nine starts that span 62.0 innings pitched, he has put together a 5-1 record to go along with a minuscule 0.87 earned run average. His ERA leads the ECC and ranks sixth nationally in Division II, while his win total is good for fourth in the conference. DeCarli was even better in ECC play, finishing with an unblemished 4-0 mark and a 0.79 ERA during the regular season. On the year, he added 53 strikeouts and held hitters to a stingy .146 batting average against. DeCarli also ranks second in Division II with 4.35 hits allowed per nine innings and sixth with a 0.82 WHIP (walks plus hits per innings pitched).After playing in just 21 games and making 12 starts last season with a .200 batting average, Groeneveld has erupted as one of the biggest threats in the lineup this year. He is second on the team in hitting with a .305 average and has colleceted 29 hits, including eight doubles and one home run. In addition, he has scored 10 runs and driven in nine more. His .407 on-base percentage leads the team and his .421 slugging percentage is good enough for fourth on the squad. On defense, Groeneveld's 235 put-outs rank fifth in the conference. For his efforts during the Pioneers' final ECC series against Queens, Groeneveld was named the conference's player of the week. In four games, the first baseman hit .615, going 8-for-13 with two runs batted in and a run scored. He also collected 11 total bases and slugged at an .846 clip.Iacono has been LIU Post's leading hitter for most of the season. The graduate sports a team-leading .330 batting average, which ranks sixth in the conference. He also leads the team with a .482 slugging percentage and his .406 on-base percentage is second behind Groeneveld. Iacono is third on the team with 16 runs scored and his 16 RBIs are second. Batting primarily out of the two-hole, the righty has collected a team-leading 54 total bases and is also tied for the team lead with eight stolen bases.DeCarli, Groeneveld and Iacono are back in action on Thursday (May 7) when they take on Dowling on Day 1 of the 2015 ECC Baseball Championships.
