BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 1, 2015) - With the 2015-16 season approaching, LIU Post Director of Athletics and Recreation
Bryan Collins announced Tuesday the hiring of
Walter Giacometti as the Pioneers' new head women's tennis coach.
"I'd like to welcome Walter to the LIU Post family," said Collins. "This was a critical hire for us because we felt our tennis program made a big step forward last year. They were very competitive in the conference and we really wanted to keep that momentum going into our tennis season this year. I think Walter is a type of guy who is familiar with what we do. He has coached in the area and against a lot of our players. He understands what it takes to compete at this level and where we need to be. We look forward to the continued development and emergence of our tennis program and look to compete for a conference championship in 2015."
Prior to becoming head coach at LIU Post, Giacometti spent one season as an assistant men's and women's tennis coach at Adelphi University. In that capacity, he helped to run practices, oversaw recruitment from foreign countries and assisted with scheduling and compliance.
For the past four years, Giacometti has directed his own junior program at several after-school initiatives throughout the New York City area. This past summer, he served as camp director of the Tiger Tennis & Swim Day Camp at LIU Post.
Giacometti received his bachelor's degree in Accounting from St. John's University in 1986. He was a four-year competitor for the Red Storm's men's tennis program and played for long-time SJU head coach George Seewagen.
Giacometti's accomplishments include coaching a pair of No. 1 ranked girls' tennis players, as well. He mentored Marin Nizri in 1994 and Vania Yui in 1996, who went on to play collegiate tennis at Columbia University and Florida International University, respectively.
Giacometti presently resides in Fresh Meadows, N.Y.
