SPARKILL, N.Y. (Sept. 12, 2015) - On Saturday, the LIU Post women's tennis team earned its first win of the 2015-16 season, defeating East Coast Conference foe St. Thomas Aquinas College, 7-2.

The victory was also Walter Giacometti's first as head coach of the Pioneers, who improved to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in ECC play.

In doubles play, LIU Post swept all three matches to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Seniors Didi Fatchikova (Sofia, Bulgaria) and Lucie Chrastecka (Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic) earned an 8-4 win in the top flight. Junior Laura Harwell (Alabaster, Ala.) and freshman Shanice Arthur (Brookville, N.Y.) only lost one game in an 8-1 triumph at the second position. Junior Heena Kewalramani (Bangkok, Thailand) and sophomore Meagan Byrne (Deer Park, N.Y.) were 8-4 victors at third doubles.

Fatchikova, Chrastecka, Arthur and Harwell all won in straight sets in their individual singles matches. Fatchikova and Chrastecka each rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 1 and No. 2 flights, respectively. For the second time in as many contests, Arthur blanked her opponent, shutting out Sara O'Brien (Orangeburg, N.Y.), 6-0, 6-0, in the third-singles position. Harwell earned a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) win over Raven DeLeon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) at the No. 4 flight.

Giacometti and the Pioneers return to action Friday, Sept. 25, when they host New York Institute of Technology in an ECC tilt in Brookville. First serve is slated for 3 p.m.
