GAFFNEY, S.C. (Feb. 14, 2016) - On Sunday, a pair of late-inning rallies ended LIU Post baseball's hopes for a four-game split at Limestone College, as the Pioneers fell 5-3 and 12-11 at Founders FCU Stadium in Gaffney.

In both games, the Pioneers (0-4) jumped out to an early lead, but they couldn't hold on as the Saints (7-3) came back in the late innings.

Game One saw freshman pitcher Brian Kavanagh (East Meadow, N.Y.) make his first collegiate start. The offense staked him to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning after senior left fielder John Bellock (Glen Cove, N.Y.) singled home a pair of runs and freshman third baseman Jimmy Mendyk (Massapequa, N.Y.) plated Bellock with a sacrifice fly.

Kavanagh put up four scoreless innings before things came undone in the fifth. The Saints touched up the freshman for five runs on four hits.

That would be all Limestone's Mark Burside needed, as he sent the Pioneers down in order in the last two innings.

Sophomore centerfielder James Cohan (Syosset, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 in the leadoff spot. Junior catcher Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.), Bellock and senior second baseman Matt Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) all collected a hit apiece. Bellock and Mendyk accounted for the three Pioneer runs batted in.

In the night cap, the two teams played a back and forth affair that saw six different lead changes throughout the seven innings of action.

It started in the first, when the Pioneers took advantage of a pair of Limestone errors to score two runs. Sophomore short stop Joe Spitaleri (Levittown, N.Y.) reached on an infield single that drove in Cohan for the game's first run. Cohan had reached on an error and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. Then, with Spitaleri on third, senior first baseman David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.) struck out, but reached on a throwing error by the catcher, which allowed Spitaleri to score.

In the bottom of the frame, the Saints answered with four runs.

Not to be outdone, LIU Post responded with a four-spot of its own in the top of the second. With two runners on, Mendyk reached on a throwing error that allowed both Bowers and junior centerfielder Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) to score. Later in the inning, sophomore right fielder Rob Andreoli (North Wantagh, N.Y.) singled home Spitaler and Mendyk to put the green and gold up 6-4.

The third inning was quiet, but the Saints scored sixth in the fourth before LIU Post answered with five in the fifth to take a 10-9 lead. Groeneveld, sophomore designated hitter Lou Doria (Wantagh, N.Y.), a wild pitch and Bowers accounted for the five runs.

Hanging on to a 10-9 lead in the seventh, an RBI single tied the score before the Saints walked off on a wild pitch.

Overall, Bowers went 3-for-6 in the double header with a pair of RBIs. Spitaleri, Cohan and Andreoli all collected two hits apiece.

Head coach Mike Gaffney and his Pioneers return to action next Friday (Feb. 26) when they head to Austin, Texas to begin a four-game set with St. Edward's University. The first pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m. ET.
