Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.), freshman pitcher
James Varela (Levittown, N.Y.) and freshman third baseman
Jimmy Mendyk (Massapequa, N.Y.) have been named the East Coast Conference's Player, Pitcher and Rookie of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Asbaty went 7-for-15 in the four games against the Hilltoppers. The junior's seven hits were a team best, and his three runs batted in tied for most on the squad. Asbaty posted two two-hit games and hit his first home run of 2016 in the second game of Saturday's (Feb. 26) doubleheader.
Varela went 7.2 innings and allowed just one earned run on Sunday (Feb. 28). The righty scattered six hits while striking out three to earn his first collegiate win.
Mendyk went 6-for-12 with five runs scored, two doubles and a run batted in in the four games. In the Pioneers' 5-3 win on Saturday, he collected his first collegiate hit and finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
Asbaty, Varela and Mendyk and the rest of the Pioneers return to the diamond next Monday (Mar. 7) when they begin play in the Palm Beach Challenge in Boca Raton, Fla.
