LANTANA, Fla. (Mar. 7, 2016) - On Monday, the LIU Post baseball team defeated Nyack College, 3-1, behind the bat of junior catcher
Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.) and the arm of junior pitcher
Jake DeCarli (Higganum, Conn.).
The Pioneers (3-6) got off to a quick start. After DeCarli put up a zero in the top of the first, Asbaty hit a one-out two-run homer, his second of the year, to give the green and gold a 2-0 lead after an inning. From there, DeCarli cruised.
In the bottom of the fourth, a run-scoring single from senior left fielder
John Bellock (Glen Cove, N.Y.) gave the Pioneers a 3-0 lead.
DeCarli tossed five scoreless innings before allowing a run in the sixth, the lone run the Warriors (1-5) would score off the righty.
DeCarli went the distance, striking out a season-high 12 batters and scattering four hits to earn his first win of the season.
Head coach
Mike Gaffney and the Pioneers return to action on Tuesday (Mar. 8) when they play Post University and Nyack in a doubleheader at the Santaluces Sports Complex. The opening pitch of the game against the Eagles is slated for 1 p.m.
