BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 21, 2017) - The LIU Post women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak Saturday with a 77-67 victory against Georgian Court University at the Pratt Recreation Center.
Freshman forward
Mikaiya Moore (Amityville, N.Y.) led the Pioneers (9-10) with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting in the victory. Senior guard
Kylie Garrett (Mount Orab, Ohio) collected 14 points off the bench. Fellow senior guard
Kristen Olsen (Staten Island, N.Y.) amassed 13 points and three assists. Sophomore forward
Sasha Patterson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) pitched in eight points, six rebounds and two assists.
Leading 26-23 with under four minutes left in the second quarter, the green and gold reeled off an 11-2 run in a two-minute stint to grab a 37-25 advantage at the 1:43 mark. Garrett sandwiched the spurt with three-pointers. Olsen added a three-point play.
The Pioneers eventually brought a seven-point cushion (37-30) into the locker room, after the Lions' Aaliyah Berger (Washington, D.C.) sank a half-court heave at the buzzer.
In the third quarter, Georgian Court (3-15) scored six of the first eight points of the period, before LIU Post responded with a 10-2 run over a stretch of 3:32 to re-gain its double-digit lead (50-36) with 4:38 remaining. Junior guard
Naya Williams (New Rochelle, N.Y.) ignited the burst with back-to-back lay-ups. Moore netted a pair of lay-ups, as well.
The Pioneers, who shot 44.8 percent (13-for-29) from the field in the latter 20 minutes of play, built as much as a 17-point edge (57-40) in the third period to pull away from the Lions.
Sophomore guard
Shannon Doyle (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) registered seven points and four steals. Fellow sophomore guard
Kyla Formey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied five points, six rebounds and three steals. Williams had five points, seven assists, four steals and three rebounds. Freshman guard
Dominique Williams (Queens Village, N.Y.) chipped in four points, four rebounds and a pair of steals.
