Old Westbury, NY| Sophomore forward Mikaiya Moore matched a game-high 14 points Saturday, but it wasn't enough, as the LIU Post women's basketball team fell to NE10 rival Adelphi University, 59-58, at Recreation Hall.
Moore was 7-of-19 from the field in the loss for the Pioneers (0-1). Senior forward Sasha Patterson added with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Up 5-4 at the 6:49 mark in the first, the Pioneers rallied for a 17-6 run, capped off by a Kristen Olsen jumper, to close out the first quarter with a 22-10 lead.
After two minutes of play in the second period, the Pioneers took their biggest of the quarter (12 points), 25-13. The Panthers (1-0) accounted for the half's final four points to cut their deficit to four (33-29) at the break.
In the 6:32 mark of the third quarter, Adelphi closed its gap to one (36-35) after back-to-back layups, however, LIU Post answered with a pair of layups of their own to go up 40-35. Up by just four, with less than a minute to play, Moore closed out the third frame with a made jumper to give the Pioneers a two-possession lead, 52-46.
The Panthers opened the final quarter with a 9-0 run into the four minute mark. An Olsen jumper closed the Pioneers gap by just one and two AU made free throws re-established the Panthers' three-point lead (57-54). Down by just one in the final five seconds of the game, LIU Post was able to get the Panthers on the line, and missed both free throws to give the Pioneers possession.
With the clock winding down, the Pioneers were able to get the ball up the court but a missed jumper ensured the 59-58 loss for the green and gold.
