CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (Feb. 27, 2017) - After an impressive effort at the Northeast Challenge, LIU Post baseball sophomore catcher/first baseman
Anthony Vaglica (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and senior pitcher
Jake DeCarli (Higganum, Conn.) were selected as the East Coast Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on Monday.
During the five-game span, Vaglica hit a stellar .571 with a team-leading three home runs and 11 RBIs. He also boasted a 1.143 slugging and .625 on-base percentage in the process.
His week included a go-ahead grand slam in a 9-5 come-from-behind win against Felician last Friday (Feb. 24), and a 4-for-5 showing with five runs scored, two homers and three RBIs in a 21-12 victory over Merrimack on Saturday (Feb. 25).
Meanwhile, DeCarli tossed seven innings of four-hit, three-run (two earned), 10-strikeout ball in a 4-3 upset of then-No. 6 Southern New Hampshire last Thursday (Feb. 23).
In his first two starts of 2017, DeCarli has allowed just five earned runs and fanned a team-high-tying 14 batters in 12.1 innings of work. Additionally, he has limited opposing teams to a .261 batting average against.
Vaglica, DeCarli and the Pioneers return to action Saturday (Mar. 4), when they host Bloomfield College in a non-conference doubleheader at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville. First pitch is set for noon.
