BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 8, 2017) - On Wednesday, the LIU Post women's basketball team rallied from a 14-point opening-half deficit to beat Mercy College, 74-68, in an East Coast Conference contest at the Pratt Recreation Center.
Trailing 38-24 in the final minute-plus of the second quarter, the Pioneers (10-13, 6-7 ECC) closed out the period on an 8-0 spurt to cut the deficit to 38-32 at the intermission.
Sophomore forward
Sasha Patterson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) ignited the burst with a three-point play. Sophomore guard
Shannon Doyle (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) accounted for the last five points of the half.
In the third quarter, the hosts quickly evened the score at 40-all, after opening the period on an 8-2 run. Senior guard
Kristen Olsen (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit a game-tying transition bucket at the 7:19 mark.
From there, the two teams went back and forth, before LIU Post reeled off a 14-3 streak in a four-minute stretch to grab a 67-59 advantage with 4:26 to go.
Freshman forward
Mikaiya Moore (Amityville, N.Y.) gave the Pioneers the lead for good with a put-back lay-up. Senior guard
Kylie Garrett (Mount Orab, Ohio) capped off the run with back-to-back treys.
For the contest, the green and gold out-rebounded their opposition by an overwhelming 46-31 count. They also capitalized on second-chance opportunities (25-8) in the process.
Doyle led all players with 15 points, in addition to seven assists and five steals. Moore, who pulled down six rebounds, and Olsen scored 14 points apiece. Patterson collected 10 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Garrett chipped in 10 points and three rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench.

Deirdre Moore and her LIU Post squad are back in action Saturday (Feb. 11), when they travel to Rochester to square off with ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan College at 1 p.m.
