Vaglica Named NCBWA East Region Player of the Week

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Feb. 28, 2017) - On Tuesday, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association gave out its first weekly awards of the 2017 season, and LIU Post sophomore catcher/first baseman Anthony Vaglica (Franklin Square, N.Y.) was named the East Region Player of the Week.

Vaglica, who also garnered East Coast Conference Player of the Week honors on Monday, batted .571 with three home runs and 11 RBIs to lead the Pioneers to a 5-0 record at the Northeast Challenge last week in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Vaglica hit the eventual game-winning grand slam in a 9-5 come-from-behind victory against Felician last Friday (Feb. 24). He followed that up with a 4-for-5 showing with two home runs, three RBIs and five runs scored in a 21-12 win versus Merrimack on Saturday (Feb. 25).

Vaglica also provided the game-tying RBI single in a 4-3 upset of then-No. 6 Southern New Hampshire last Thursday (Feb. 23) and added a three-RBI day in a 6-2 triumph over Franklin Pierce on Sunday (Feb. 26).

Through nine games, Vaglica leads the ECC in home runs (3), doubles (4) and RBIs (15). Additionally, he ranks second in the league in hitting with a .455 batting average.

Vaglica and the Pioneers are back in action Saturday (Mar. 4), when they square off with Bloomfield College in a non-conference doubleheader at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville, N.Y. First pitch is set for noon.
