Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The LIU Post women's soccer team opened the 2017 campaign with a 5-0 non-conference shutout against Southern Connecticut State University on Friday afternoon at Abow Field on the campus of American International College (AIC).
The Pioneers (1-0) came out hot, scoring four goals in the first half. Sophomore
Julia Duffy (Oceanside, N.Y.) notched the first tally of the season off a feed from freshman
Erin O'Connor (Setauket, N.Y.) in the sixth minute.
In the 18
th minute, O'Connor doubled the lead off a steal, passing three defenders to find the back of the net. She followed less than a minute and a half later with her second assist of the contest, this time finding junior
Andrea Huntzinger (Stockholm, Sweden) for the header.
Duffy capped off the first half scoring with just under 10 minutes to go until the intercession, this time teaming up with sophomore
Veronica Saager (East Islip, N.Y.).
With five minutes left in the tilt, redshirt sophomore
Alice Schonfeldt (Burtrask, Sweden) was awarded a penalty kick that she completed to secure the 5-0 victory.
Junior
Hillevi Eklow (Varobacka, Sweden) turned aside each of the Owls (0-1) four shots on goal, while her counterpart Gabrielle Arruda made one save on the contest.
O'Connor and Duffy led the way offensively with three (1g,2a) and two (2g) points, respectively.
Next up for LIU Post is a non-conference matchup against Southern New Hampshire University on Sunday, Sept. 3. The game will take place at AIC at 11 a.m.
