POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Senior Talya Williams (Schenectady, N.Y.) began the 2017 campaign with a second-place finish as the LIU Post men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Marist Invitational held at Vassar College.

In the 5000-meter race, Williams was just edged out by two-and-one half seconds as she crossed the finish line second overall and first in the non-Division I group with a time of 18:12.1.  This time set a new LIU Post best mark at the Vassar Farms course, breaking the record she set last year by a whopping 23 seconds.

Also racing on the women's side were sophomore Nicolette Agostinacchio (Wantagh, N.Y.) (20:58.8), sophomore Alexandria Okon (Laurel, Md.) (21:22.4), junior Kaitie Schillaci (Albany, N.Y.) (21:22.9), sophomore Kaitlyn Jones (Ridgewood, N.Y.) (26:41.7), and sophomore Nicole Costanzo (Wantagh, N.Y.) (27:11.3).

On the men's side, LIU Post defeated Hunter in the 6,000-meter non-Division I category by a score of 21-34.  Freshman Andrew Gleave (Seaford, N.Y.) led the pack, crossing the finish line second out of the non-Division I runners with a time of 21:59.8. The Pioneers also secured the third-through-fifth place finishes in their category as sophomore Erick Rivera (Amityville, N.Y.), senior Lance Edwards (Stratford, Conn.), and freshman Joe Dorso (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) all finished within 21 seconds of each other at 22:12.3, 22:23.8, and 22:33.3, respectively.

Freshman John Maher (Lunenberg, Mass.) followed close behind with a 22:40.8 mark, good for a seventh-place finish.  Rounding out the green and gold runners was sophomore Justin Ortega (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and freshman Joseph Velez (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) with times of 24:18.8 and 24:39.4, respectively.

The Pioneer cross country teams return to action on Saturday, Sept. 9 when they run at the Fordham Fiasco in Bronx, N.Y.
