BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Led by double-doubles from senior
Rachel Londot and junior
Samantha Colombo, the LIU Post women's volleyball team overcame the University of Bridgeport 3-1 (20-25, 32-20, 25-21, 25-22) Friday night inside the Pratt Recreation Center.
The win moved LIU Post to 17-11 overall and 7-4 in the East Coast Conference.
The Pioneers recorded 60 kills to 45 by Bridgeport; LIU Post's 60 kills was its third-highest total of the season and the highest it's recorded in a four-set match. The Green & Gold also had 77 digs to 57 by the Purple Knights and 56 assists to Bridgeport's 43.
Match Rewind
The opening set began as a tightly-contested affair until the Pioneers went on a 4-0 run when they were down 13-12; a trio of kills by Londot along with a block by freshman
Kiora Ridgeway gave LIU Post a 16-13 lead. Despite the Pioneers impressive signs the Purple Knights went on to win the set 25-20.
A 5-0 run that featured a pair of kills by sophomore
Lauren Kloos, a service ace by junior
Allie Ahearne and a pair of Purple Knight attacking errors run early in the second set gave the Pioneers a 6-3 advantage early in the second set. Despite LIU Post's early lead the set played out as a true back-and-forth battle. A kill by Colombo put LIU Post ahead 30-29 and the Pioneers went on to outlast Bridgeport 32-30.
Colombo opened the third set with a kill off an assist by junior
Kassie Akouri-Tejedor but the set would play out similarly to the previous as it was tightly-contested. LIU Post closed it out on a 3-0 run that featured kills by sophomore
Asiya Way, Londot and a Bridgeport attacking error to win 25-21.
LIU Post opened the fourth set with a 6-0 run keyed by a kill from Kloos and also featuring a kill by Londot, a Colombo service ace, a double block by Way and Kloos along with a pair of errors by the Purple Knights. When Bridgeport eventually narrowed the margin to 23-22, head coach
Stephanie Sheehan called a timeout and the Pioneers responded with a kill by Colombo and a double block by Kloos and Way to seal the set and match.
Top Performers
- Londot had a double-double with a match-high 14 kills and 14 digs
- Colombo also had a double-double as she recorded 13 kills, 10 digs and added two service aces
- Akouri-Tejedor finished with a match-high 27 assists along with five kills and six digs
- Junior Abby Eckhardt had a team-high 21 digs
- Kloos tied for the match-high in total blocks with four and also added eight kills
- Way had a three blocks and seven kills
