OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The No. 7 LIU Post women's lacrosse team claimed the East Coast Conference regular season championship and secured the number one overall seed for the conference tournament with a 13-10 victory against the New York Institute of Technology in the 2018 edition of the Battle of the Boulevard April 21.
With the win, the Pioneers finished the regular season with a perfect 8-0 record in ECC play, extending their conference winning streak to 24 games.
Sophomore
Alyssa Mallery led the Pioneers offensively Saturday with five goals, while fellow classmate
Brianna Feldman chipped in three tallies. Sophomores
Jill LoManto and
Casey Dugan added two assists for the only four helpers on the day for LIU Post.
The Bears held a 32-30 advantage in shots on the day, but the Pioneers recorded 24 shots on target to just 20 for NYIT. In goal, senior
Olivia Kirk made 10 saves to earn the victory.
NYIT struck first, just 68 seconds into the contest when
Alyssa Milano found the back of the net on the game's second shot. The Pioneers responded less than a minute later though when Mallery scored her first of the day and Feldman followed suit five minutes later to give LIU Post a 2-1 advantage.
After the Bears retook the lead, sophomore
Paige Sherlock sparked a 5-0 run to close out the first half and give the Pioneers a 7-3 lead at the half. The Bears made things interesting, however, getting to within two goals on three separate occasions before Feldman and Sherlock extended the lead for good with just over 11 minutes remaining.
The Pioneers close out the regular season with two non-conference matchups against nationally ranked opponents, beginning with No. 1/2 Lindenwood University on Wednesday, April 25 at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium. The opening draw for that contest is slated for 3:00 p.m.
