NCBWA ALL-REGION TEAMS
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) recognized four LIU Post baseball players on the All-East Region teams as announced by the organization May 17.
Junior
James Varela earned first-team recognition, while classmate
Dave Brehm garnered second-team accolades and fellow junior
Anthony Vaglica and senior
Ramger Iglesias earned honorable mention recognition.
The East Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year, Varela earned first-team recognition with Northeast-10 Co-Pitchers of the Year,
David Palmer and
Josiah Gray as the top starting pitchers in the region. Varela tallied a region-best 116 strikeouts and 11 victories. The right-hander currently ranks 13th in the country in strikeouts and fourth in victories, breaking the LIU Post single-season program record in both categories.
Notching a breakout season as a junior, Brehm leads the Pioneers with a .364 average at the plate, recording 63 hits with nine doubles and 28 runs batted in. Vaglica also had a big season at the plate, leading the team with 14 doubles and ranking second with six home runs and 29 RBIs.
In a season full of broken records, Iglesias shattered a 38-year old program mark for stolen bases, stealing 39 bags in his one season in the Green and Gold. The Bronx native ranks third in the country in stolen bases. At the plate, Iglesias leads the team with 66 hits and a .443 on-base percentage, while sitting second with a .351 average.
