BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – LIU Post junior right-handed pitcher James Varela added to his postseason resume this week, garnering All-America accolades from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, American Baseball Coaches Association, and Division II Conference Commissioners Association.

Varela was recognized for his outstanding season on the mound with second-team accolades from the ABCA and D2CCA, while adding third-team honors from the NCBWA. Varela was one of three starting pitchers from the East Region named to the annual All-America teams, joining University of New Haven senior David Palmer, and the NCBWA Pitcher of the Year, Le Moyne College junior Josiah Gray.

The right-hander had a season for the ages for LIU Post, setting new program single-season marks in strikeouts (116) and victories (11), both coming during a 13-4 victory against Molloy College on April 27. Varela ranks fifth in Division II in victories, while also ranking fifth in complete games (7) and 16th in strikeouts. In the East Coast Conference opening round, Varela tossed his seventh complete game of the season, striking out six batters to help lift the Green and Gold into the winners' bracket. The junior notched a career-high 13 batters during his sixth-consecutive complete game. During the same stretch, Varela tossed a 10-inning complete game against Queens College, marking the longest outing of his career.

Varela finished the 2018 season with an 11-1 record with a 2.40 earned run average and a .185 opponent batting average.
