LIU Post Mourns the Passing of Hall of Famer Roy Chernock

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU Post Department of Athletics is saddened to announce the passing of Hall of Famer Roy Chernock.

"Coach C" passed away peacefully in West Palm Beach, Fla. On Sept. 4 at the age of 90.

"Roy was a true Pioneer who mentored and touched the lives of so many of our student-athletes both on and off the track," said Debbie DeJong, LIU Post Director of Athletics. "Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time."

Chernock was one of the most successful track & field coaches at LIU Post from 1968 to 1973, mentoring five NCAA Individual National Champions and 39 All-Americans during his tenure. His accomplishments included amassing a 42-1 regular season record in meets, including leading the Pioneers to an unbeaten mark during the 1968 season. LIU Post won five-consecutive indoor track & field and four outdoor track & field conference titles under Chernock. He later went on to have successful coaching stints at Baruch College, the College of William and Mary, and Princeton University.

As an athlete, Chernock's career highlights included winning the 1959 Metropolitan Intercollegiate long jump title and was the high scorer for Team USA at the Maccabiah Games in Israel. He competed in the sport into his late 60s, holding national masters records in the 100 and 200-meter dash and the 100-meter hurdles.
