ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The LIU Post women's volleyball team moved to 2-0 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play after defeating Roberts Wesleyan College 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 21-25, 25-22) in a match where the Pioneers held an advantage in every statistical category Friday night inside the Voller Athletic Center.
"All I can say is it wasn't pretty but we got it done," said head coach
Stephanie Sheehan. "Hopefully we can build off the positives from tonight and correct some things tomorrow."
The Pioneers move to 11-3 all-time against Roberts Wesleyan and the win was LIU Post's fifth- consecutive over the Hawks.
LIU Post finished with 55 kills to Roberts Wesleyan's 35, 49 assists to 30 by the Redhawks, eight aces to the Redhawks', six blocks to three by the Hawks and 49 digs to 30 by Roberts Wesleyan.
Along with the win improving LIU Post's ECC record to 2-0 the Pioneers moved to 10-5 overall.
Match Rewind
The Redhawks won the opening two points of the first set but the Pioneers bounced back and evened the score thanks to kills by sophomore
Lauren Kloos and junior
Lea Brady. Roberts Wesleyan proceeded to win the following two points; LIU Post responded with a 5-0 run keyed by back-to-back kills by senior
Rachel Londot that gave the Pioneers a 7-4 lead. The Pioneers and Redhawks then traded points until a kill by freshman
Kiora Ridgeway led off a 3-0 run that gave LIU Post an 11-6 lead. With the Pioneers ahead 14-11 Roberts Wesleyan used a 5-0 run to surge ahead take the lead 16-14. The teams exchange leads once more until LIU Post closed the set out on a 4-0 run that featured kills by senior
Elise Strange, back-to-back service ace by junior
Allie Ahearne and a block by Ridgeway. LIU Post won the set 25-20.
The second set started similar to the first as the Hawks won the opening two points and LIU Post winning the next two to level the score 2-2. With the score tied 4-4 Roberts Wesleyan went on a 6-0 run and proceeded to take a 10-4 lead. The Pioneers narrowed the margin to 10-8 after a 4-0 run that featured kills by Londot, a solo block by junior
Samantha Colombo along with a service error and an attacking error by the Redhawks. With the score 18-14 in Roberts Wesleyan's favor LIU Post took the lead thanks to a 5-0 run featuring kills by Londot and Ridgeway along with a pair of attacking errors and a bad set by the Redhawks. The set ended with a double block by Kloos and Brady and a service ace by Colombo as LIU Post won 25-21.
In a set that was the was definition of a back-and-forth battle as the score was tied 14 times, Kloos started things of with a kill. From there both teams traded points until the score was tied 17-17 and Roberts Wesleyan used a 4-0 run to break the stalemate; a kill by junior
Kassie Akouri-Tejedor and a block by Strange narrowed the score to 21-19 but ultimately the set belonged to the Redhawks as they prevailed 25-21.
LIU Post raced out to a 5-1 lead in the fourth set thanks to two kills by Kloos, one by Londot and a double block by Brady and Kloos. The Pioneers held an 11-6 lead but Roberts Wesleyan went on a 6-0 run and took a 12-11 lead. A kill by Colombo from an assist by senior
Giulia Genna keyed a 3-0 run that also featured back-to-back service aces by Akouri-Tejedor gave LIU Post a 14-12 lead. The set continued to be a back-and-forth battle as the score was tied at 19-19 and 21-21; a Roberts Wesleyan attacking error followed by back-to-back Kloos kills gave the Pioneers a 24-21 lead. LIU Post went on to win the set 25-22 with a kill by Akouri-Tejedor on match point.
Top Performers
- Londot notched a double-double with a match high 18 kills and 10-digs along with a .457 attacking percentage
- Genna also recorded a double-double as she handed out 17 assists and added a match-high 16 digs
- Akouri-Tejedor led the match in assists with 22 and also had eight digs and two service aces
- Kloos added 12 kills and two block assists
