Men's Basketball Attempts to Extend the Win Streak to Five Against NYIT on Wednesday
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 6, 2011) – The men's basketball team of C.W. Post will be looking to extend a four-game winning streak as the Pioneers open up conference play against New York Institute of Technology tomorrow night on the road. The team has started this season winning six of the first seven games.
The Pioneers are coming off a 79-63 win over Queens, and was not played as a conference game.
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) led the way with 20 points and seven rebounds. The junior guard also connected on nine of his 11 free throw attempts to help the cause. Freshman
Charles McCann (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) recorded his first collegiate double-double behind 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Carberry helped push his team to finish the game going 25 for 32 from the charity stripe, compared to Queens only attempting nine and connecting on seven. C.W. Post also capitalized on Queens' turnovers, creating 18 points of those errors.
Coach
Chris Casey's team has now generated a point per game output of 88.4 that has led to a positive 8.0 point per game margin over opponents. The long-range shots have helped the Pioneers, who are averaging 6.6 three-pointers made per game to go with an efficient 49.2 percentage from the field overall. The Pioneers have also managed a 73.2 percentage from the free throw line to help convert on 19.0 free throws made per game. And also, C.W. Post has controlled the glass against opponents for that the team holds a positive 8.4 average rebounding margin over challengers.
With a 22.6 point per game average, Carberry currently leads the team in scoring. He has shot the ball well, establishing a 55.0 shooting percentage. The guard is also pulling down 6.6 rebounds a game while playing 35.6 minutes per contest. Carrberry joins teammate,
Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.), as two of the top scorers in the conference. Bonneau is connecting on an average of 2.4 three-pointers made a game to help his scoring average of 21.3 points per game. He is also contributing 3.3 assists per game as well as 1.5 steals per game on the defensive end.
Sophomore forward
Vaughn Allen (Middletown, N.Y.) continues to lead the team in rebounding with 8.8 boards a game to go with his scoring average of 12.3. McCann has also added depth to the frontline, as he is coming off the bench to contribute 1.7 blocks a game while hauling in 5.1 rebounds per contest.
Senior point guard
Terry Coleman (Newburgh, N.Y.) has helped the Pioneers find efficiency in shooting as the guard has shot an impressive 57.1 percent from the field, which also included 53.8 percent from beyond the arc. Another guard has also found the touch from long range as
Vince Rosario (Perth Amboy, N.J.) has connected on 13 shots from distance thus far.
The Bears of NYIT are coming off their second win of the season, earning an 88-56 victory over Nyack last Tuesday, Nov. 29. Four players figured into double-figure scoring, led by Ryan William's 18 points off the bench. The Bears held a 52-28 rebounding edge during the game, as Azel Prather, Jr. pulled down a game-high 13 boards. Jahari McKnight helped pace the offense with eight assists.
As a team, NYIT is now averaging 75.1 points per game while allowing opponents to put in on average 77.1 points. The team has managed to shoot the ball well with a 46.5 team field goal percentage while also distributing the ball well behind a 16.86 assists per game average. That average has helped lead to a 1.36 assist to turnover ratio. NYIT is also outrebounding opponents on average of 1.9 boards per game.
Kayvon Roberts, a junior swingman that made All-Conference First Team last season, is currently leading the Bears in scoring with 13.4 points a game. The junior is shooting 43.9 percent from the field while also averaging six free throws made per game. Fellow junior, Dominic Scurry, joins Roberts with a double-figure scoring average as Scurry has put together 12.8 points a game to go along with 2.8 assists a game. He has also shot the ball well, holding a field goal percentage of 45.9.
Prather, Jr. is also off to a strong start, as he close to averaging a double-double on the season with his point per game and rebounding average both being at an even 9.0.
Nick Fessenden and Jaheel Felix have combined to earn two ECC Rookie of the Week honors for the Bears. Felix, who just earned the award last week, is currently shooting the ball at a 47.2 percentage to help solidify a 6.1 point per game average. Fessenden earned the accolade the previous week and has continued a strong freshman campaign with a
5.1 point per game and 4.6 rebounds per game.
The game is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start on the campus of NYIT tomorrow night, just down the road from the C.W. Post campus. The two men's teams will be a night after the two women's teams take to the NYIT court tonight at 5 p.m.
