Men’s and Women’s Basketball to Play Road Matchups Against St. Thomas Aquinas College

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 23, 2013) – The women's and men's basketball teams will travel to Sparkill, N.Y., to take on St. Thomas Aquinas College tonight at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively.

The Pioneers women's basketball team will try to break the fourth place tie they have with the Spartans in the East Coast Conference after they fell to unbeaten New York Institute of Technology 72-64 on Saturday. Both teams are 4-3 in the ECC. Senior Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) is the leading scorer for the Pioneers, averaging 14.9 points per game. Junior Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) is right behind her in double figures, scoring 10.7 points per game to go along with 3.4 assists per game. The team's best three point shooter is junior Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.), who is second in the ECC with a conversion rate of 43.1 percent (22-51) from behind the arc. The Pioneers are shooting 38.5 percent (370-962) from the field and lead the ECC in rebounding with a +8.0 margin against their opponents.

St. Thomas Aquinas is trying to stop a two game skid with top scorers senior Shpresa Liharevic and junior Sara Oliveira registering 11.1 and 10.1 points per game respectively. The Spartans have two productive leaders on the glass as Liharevic is averaging a team best 4.9 rebounds per game and freshman Alyson Brennan is not too far behind with 4.8 rebounds per game. Sophomore Ashley Motrechuk leads the defense with 1.5 blocks per game, which is fourth best in the ECC. St. Thomas Aquinas is shooting 35.5 percent (351-989) as a team and sinking 64.9 percent (179-276) of their free throws.

The LIU Post men's basketball team comes into tonight's game with its 11-game win streak snapped after a narrow 80-78 loss to NYIT over the weekend. The team will look to improve on its 6-1 ECC record and 11-4 overall standing. Senior Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) is the ECC's leading scorer with 19.1 points per game, followed by Junior Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) in second with 15.5 points per game. Jonathan Kohler (Bordentown, N.J.) is third on the Pioneers with 11.5 points per game and third in the conference with a 52.4 field goal percentage (43-82). Allen is also among ECC leaders, snatching 8.9 rebounds per game. Senior Billy Butler (Elmont, N.Y.) is atop the ECC with 5.1 assists per game. LIU Post has averaged 80.1 points per game and is shooting 47.1 percent (426-904) from the field.

The men's side for the Spartans has lost three of its last four, dropping its ECC record to 3-4 and overall mark to 3-12. The Spartans have been spreading the ball around on offense with senior Justin Brown scoring a team high 18.1 points per game this season. Freshman T.J. Jones is second best with 12.7 points per game and freshman Sean James follows with 11.2 points per game. James is also a three-point threat for St. Thomas Aquinas, shooting 42.6 percent (20-47) from behind the arc. The Spartans have combined for 140 assists and 39.7 percent (344-867) shooting from the field.
