Men's And Women's Basketball Set For Double-Header Saturday Against Queens

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 3, 2013) – Both the men's and women's basketball teams will be in action Saturday, Jan. 5 as they host East Coast Conference foe Queens College in the Pratt Recreation Center.  Tip-offs are set for 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively.

The LIU Post women's basketball team is currently enjoying a three game win streak, most recently grinding out a 77-71 overtime victory at the College of Saint Rose Wednesday night.  Senior Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) lead the Pioneer offense as both have scored in double-digits in each of the last four games.  Marciniak is averaging 15.3 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, while Peters is averaging 10.6 points per game.  Right behind the pair is sophomore Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) and senior Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) who are averaging 9.7 and 9.5 points per game.  Rounding out the top five scorers for the Pioneers is senior Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.).  Kopp is currently averaging 8.6 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks per game.  As a team, the Pioneers are shooting 38.6% (245-634) from the floor, including 29.9% (50-167) from beyond the arc.  The Pioneers have been tremendous on the glass, out-rebounding their opponents 446-393 for a margin of +5.3.  Also the combination of Kopp and Marciniak has helped the squad to 4.9 blocks per game, while their opponents have registered a mere 2.6 blocks per game.

Also coming off a victory in an overtime thriller, the women's basketball team of Queens College is led by two-time ECC player of the week senior Bria Jackson who scored 49 points in the double-overtime win over Bowie State including a buzzer beater to secure the win.  Jackson is currently leading the ECC in scoring, averaging 23.6 points per game. Scoring just as many points from downtown as she does from inside the arc, she is shooting 43.5% (67-154) from the floor including 41.5% (27-65) from three-point range.  Jackson is also an excellent free-throw shooter, hitting 51-62 for an 82.3 free-throw percentage.  Mackenzie Rowland is the other Knight in double figures, averaging 10.3 points per game and has been strong on the boards, grabbing a team-high 7.8 rebounds per game.  The Knights are currently shooting 39.1% (214-547) from field goal range, including 31.2% (44-141) from downtown. 

On the men's side, senior Tobin Carberry (Hamen, Conn.) is seeking to lead the Pioneers to remain perfect in conference play as they play for their eighth straight victory.  Carberry is averaging an ECC-best 19.0 points per game on 45.4% shooting (69-152), including 16-46 from three-point range.  Close behind in scoring is senior Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) with 16.4 points per game while shooting an excellent 53.8% (56-104) from the floor.  Allen is also the top Pioneer on the glass, bringing down 8.7 rebounds per game with sophomore Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) adding 7.9 boards per game.  The Pioneers are shooting 46.6% from the floor (279-599) and are averaging 13.6 assists per game while out-rebounding opponents by a +7.8 margin.

Queens has lost three straight and is 0-5 on the road this season.  The Knights have two strong offensive weapons in George Holmes and Patrick Parker who are averaging 16.5 and 16.1points per game, respectively.  Holmes is coming off a 23 point performance in Knights' 66-60 loss to Franklin Pierce.  He and Pat Piasecki are the Knights top performers on the glass, both averaging 6.0 boards per game.  Queens is averaging 68.9 points per game, shooting 39.0% (220-564) from field goal range, and has been out-rebounded by its opponents 362-355.
