Women’s And Men’s Basketball Tip Off Against Queens College Tonight
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 6, 2013) - The LIU Post women's and men's basketball teams return to the court tonight to take on Queens College in East Coast Conference contests that begin at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively.
The Pioneer women's team has won three of its last four games with the help of leading scorer senior
Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who is averaging 14.3 points per game. Junior
Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) and sophomore
Chelsea Williams (Copaigue, N.Y.) round out the top three scorers for LIU Post with 10.6 and 9.1 points per game, respectively. Peters also has a team-high 3.4 assists per game, which is just ahead of senior
Ashley Caggiano's (Holtsville, N.Y.) average of 3.3 assists per game. Caggiano leads the ECC in three point shooting, converting 45.2 percent (28-62) of her shots from downtown. She dished out a season-high eight assists in her last outing against Queens. The Pioneers are shooting 38.6 percent (455-1179) from the field and getting off to fast starts by outscoring their opponents 627-553 in the first half.
Queens College's women's team is trying to end a two game losing skid after falling to New York Institute of Technology and St. Thomas Aquinas. The Knights have the ECC's leading scorer in senior Bria Jackson, who's putting up 19.6 points per game. Jackson is third in the conference in assists per game with 4.5 and fourth in the ECC from three-point range, shooting 39.4 percent (41-104) from behind the arc. Freshman Mackenzie Rowland leads Queens on the defensive end with 7.8 rebounds per game while freshman Joya McFarland has a team-high 1.9 steals per game. The Knights are shooting 40.1 percent (424-1058) from the field and out rebounding opponents 769-662.
The LIU Post men's team has dropped two of its last three games and is coming off a tight 75-73 overtime loss to Molloy College. Senior
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) leads the Pioneer offense with 18.2 points per game, which is just shy of the conference best mark of 18.3 points per game from Mercy College senior Joseph Pope. Junior
Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) is second on the team with 16.8 points per game followed by senior
Jonathan Kohler (Bordentown, N.J.), who has 12.4 points per game. Allen is second in the ECC in both rebounds per game and field goal percentage, coming in with figures of 9.2 and 53.3 percent (112-210), respectively. Senior
Billy Butler (Elmont, N.Y.) continues to hold the top spot in the conference by averaging 5.3 assists per game. The Pioneers are outscoring opponents by a +8.5 margin and lead the ECC in total rebounds this season snatching 810 to their opponents' 612.
The men's side for the Knights comes into tonight's contest looking to extend its five game winning streak. Junior Patrick Parker and junior George Holmes are consistently scoring in double figures with 16.4 and 15.8 points per game respectively. Holmes is averaging a team-high 6.5 rebounds per game and is fourth in the ECC with 2.1 steals per game. Junior Kevin Nascimento leads the Knights with 3.6 assists per game. Queens is shooting 68.8 percent (275-400) from the free throw line and sinking 41.7 percent (464-1113) of their field goals.
